Area codes 678 and 470
678 is a North American Numbering Plan area code assigned to metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia. The area code was first assigned to customers signing up for new telephone service on January 15, 1998. In local shorthand, 678 is usually written in shorthand for informal communication, such as 6/555-1234[citation needed]. A new area code, 470, was established as an overlay of 678 and activated on February 26, 2010.[1]
The 678 and 470 area codes are an overlay of the 404 and 770 area codes (those two covering separate areas for landlines, 404 covering primarily Atlanta proper and 770 the remainder of the metropolitan area). They were introduced to relieve telephone exchanges in the world's largest toll-free calling zone.[2]
Although ten-digit local dialing had been possible in the Atlanta area since area code 770 was introduced in 1995, it was not until January 1, 1998, when 678 was implemented, that ten-digit dialing finally became required across the entire metro area.[3]
Currently, cell phone subscribers can choose from the 404, 470, 678, or 770 area codes when signing up for service.
